A monorail is a rail-based transportation system based on a single rail, which acts as its sole support and its guideway.

The Line 1, also referred to as Jacob Circle-Wadala-Chembur line/corridor, of the Mumbai Monorail is part of the rapid transit system for the city of Mumbai, India. It will cost approximately INR3000 crore.The 19.54 km line will be fully elevated.

In the first phase, it will consist of 7 stations from Wadala to Chembur.Line 1 will be the first monorail in India, since the closing of the Patiala State Monorail Trainways in 1927. Line 1 is the world's second longest monorail corridor, after the 21.2 km long Osaka Monorail Main Line in Japan.

The Master Plan prepared by the DMRC, has been divided into the following phases for the implementation of the project: First phase from Wadala to Chembur is 8.80 km long. Second phase from Wadala to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk is 11.20 KM long.

News regarding Mumbai Monorail


  • Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was supposed to inaugurate the project on November 29 2008 but the ceremony was called-off due to the recent terrorist attack.
  •  Dec 4, 2008 Work on the ambitious monorail project has begun sans the foundation stone laying ceremony
  • Trial Run on Anilk – Wadala road flagged by Hon’ble Chief Minister on 26th January, 2010
  • In 2011, a slab from the monorail collapsed, killing two persons
  • February 18, 2012 The monorail testing done by Malaysia's Scomi Group which is building the monorail along with Larsen & Toubro. The public testing of the monorail done from Wadala Depot to Mysore Colony, a distance of over 4 km.

  • The Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle corridor of the Mumbai Monorail, is 19.5 km-long
  • The project was awarded to a consortium of L&T, and Scoomi, which is a Malaysian infrastructure company
  • The contract for the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle corridor was for Rs 2,700 crore
